Minnesota UTV Riding — A Founder’s Home State and Why the RZM3 Was Made for These Trails
I was born and raised in Minnesota. I grew up riding ATVs across fields, through forests, and on trails that most people outside the Midwest don’t know exist. Minnesota shaped how I ride, how I think about the outdoors, and ultimately why I built RZ Mask in 2010.
When people think about serious UTV riding, they often think about Glamis, Moab, or the Appalachian trail systems. And those are incredible destinations. But Minnesota has its own riding culture — deep, passionate, and year-round in ways that would surprise riders from other parts of the country. The trails here are real. The dust here is real. And the need for proper respiratory protection is just as real as anywhere else in the country.
This is the story of Minnesota UTV riding — and why the RZM3 was built for riders like the ones I grew up with.
Minnesota’s UTV and ATV Riding Culture
Minnesota has one of the most active OHV communities in the United States. The state manages thousands of miles of ATV and UTV trails across state forests, state parks, and designated OHV areas. From the Iron Range in the north to the bluffs of the southeast, from the farmland of the southwest to the lake country of the central region — Minnesota offers riding terrain that is as diverse as any state in the country.
Riders here run Polaris RZR, Polaris Ranger, Can-Am Defender, Can-Am Maverick X3, CFMOTO UForce, and every other major UTV brand. Minnesota is also home to Polaris Industries — one of the most iconic powersports brands in the world, headquartered in Medina, Minnesota. RZ Mask partnered with Polaris early on, and that partnership has deep roots in the same state where I learned to ride.
Where Minnesota Riders Ride
Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area — Crosby, MN
One of Minnesota’s premier OHV destinations. The Cuyuna Lakes area offers trail riding through former iron ore mining terrain — a unique landscape of lakes, hills, and reclaimed land that draws riders from across the state. Dry summer conditions on the hardpack and gravel trail surfaces generate significant mineral dust. The RZM3 is the right call for a full day at Cuyuna.
Nemadji State Forest — Carlton and Pine Counties
Thousands of acres of state forest in northeastern Minnesota with extensive ATV and UTV trail access. Sandy soil and forest trail surfaces generate fine particulate during dry conditions. The Nemadji system is a favorite for riders in the Twin Cities metro who want a full day of trail riding within a reasonable drive.
Savanna Portage State Park — McGregor, MN
A historic portage route turned OHV destination in north-central Minnesota. The trails here wind through mixed forest and wetland terrain, with sandy and organic soil surfaces that generate fine dust during dry summer and fall conditions.
Iron Range Trail Systems — Northern Minnesota
The Iron Range of northeastern Minnesota — the region that built the American steel industry — offers extensive OHV trail access through former mining terrain, boreal forest, and lake country. Mineral dust from disturbed mining-era soil and gravel surfaces is a constant companion on dry riding days.
Farm Fields and Private Land — Greater Minnesota
Some of the best riding in Minnesota happens on private agricultural land — harvested cornfields in fall, hay fields in summer, and the open spaces between farms that define rural Minnesota. Agricultural dust — dried soil, crop residue, and organic particulate — is among the densest and most persistent dust riders encounter anywhere. I grew up riding in these conditions. The RZM3 was built for them.
Minnesota’s Dust Conditions: What Riders Actually Breathe
Minnesota riding generates several distinct dust profiles depending on terrain and season:
Summer hardpack trails: Clay and mineral dust from dried trail surfaces. Dense and persistent during dry spells. Group rides on popular trail systems create sustained clouds that don’t clear between machines.
Fall agricultural riding: Harvested field dust is some of the finest and most persistent organic particulate riders encounter. Corn and soybean harvest leaves behind dried soil and crop residue that becomes airborne at the slightest disturbance.
Sandy forest trails: Fine sand and organic particulate from forest floor surfaces. Stays suspended longer than heavier clay dust and penetrates every gap in a cab or open machine.
Iron Range mineral dust: Fine mineral particulate from disturbed mining-era soil and gravel. A unique dust profile that serious Iron Range riders know well.
Riders should use properly fitted respiratory protection to help reduce inhalation of airborne dust and particles in all of these conditions. The RZM3 is built for every one of them.
Built in Minnesota’s Spirit. Built for Minnesota Riders.
I didn’t build RZ Mask in a lab or a corporate office. I built it from the experience of being a rider — a Minnesota rider who knew what it felt like to come home from a long day on the trails with grit in my teeth, dust in my sinuses, and that familiar scratchy feeling that every serious off-road rider knows.
Minnesota taught me to ride. Minnesota taught me to respect the outdoors. And Minnesota’s riding culture — tough, practical, year-round, and deeply passionate — is exactly the culture the RZM3 was built for.
Whether you’re running the Cuyuna trails on a Polaris RZR, working the back forty on a Polaris Ranger, exploring the Iron Range on a Can-Am Defender, or riding the forest trails of northeastern Minnesota on a CFMOTO UForce — the RZM3 was made for your ride.
Protect the ride. Protect the rider. That’s Minnesota tough.

FAQ: Minnesota UTV Riding and Dust Protection
Where are the best UTV trails in Minnesota?
Top Minnesota UTV and ATV riding destinations include Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area (Crosby), Nemadji State Forest (Carlton/Pine Counties), Savanna Portage State Park (McGregor), the Iron Range trail systems of northeastern Minnesota, and extensive private agricultural land across greater Minnesota.
What is the best dust mask for Minnesota UTV riding?
The RZM3 by RZ Mask — built by a founder who was born and raised in Minnesota and learned to ride on the same trails and fields that Minnesota riders know today. The RZM3 uses dual active carbon filtration designed to help reduce inhalation of airborne dust and particles across all Minnesota terrain types.
Is dust a problem on Minnesota UTV trails?
Yes. Minnesota’s diverse terrain generates clay and mineral dust on hardpack trails, fine sand particulate on forest trails, agricultural dust on farm land, and mineral dust on Iron Range terrain. Dry summer and fall conditions make dust a consistent presence on Minnesota’s most popular riding areas.
Is RZ Mask connected to Minnesota?
Yes. RZ Mask founder Steve Torbenson was born and raised in Minnesota and learned to ride ATVs and UTVs on Minnesota’s trails and fields. RZ Mask also has deep ties to Polaris Industries, headquartered in Medina, Minnesota — one of RZ Mask’s earliest powersports partners.
What UTV brands are popular in Minnesota?
Minnesota riders run Polaris RZR, Polaris Ranger, Can-Am Defender, Can-Am Maverick X3, CFMOTO UForce, and other major UTV brands. Minnesota is home to Polaris Industries, making it one of the most powersports-connected states in the country.
