Start with the task and its requirements.
Cutting, sanding, routing, finishing, and working with reclaimed materials can involve different airborne concerns. Dust collection, ventilation, material instructions, and appropriate equipment all belong in the planning process. For workplace tasks, your employer and safety personnel determine the protection required.
Common concerns to discuss
- Hardwood and softwood dust from cutting, routing, and sanding.
- MDF and composite materials, including the ingredients identified in their safety information.
- Finishing products such as stains, varnishes, lacquers, paints, and adhesives.
- Reclaimed materials that may contain old coatings or preservatives.
Review the OSHA wood-dust resources and the safety information for the materials you use. Ask your safety officer about task-specific requirements.
RZM3: a reusable mask with replaceable filters.
The RZM3 is a reusable particulate-filtration mask. It is not a NIOSH-approved respirator. Do not use the RZM3 where a NIOSH-approved respirator is required, in atmospheres that are oxygen-deficient or immediately dangerous to life or health, or for protection against gases, vapors, or hazardous contaminants.
The RZM3 is a reusable mask built for everyday particulate work. Woodworking and shop dust, sanding and sweeping, yard and property maintenance, cleanup, riding, travel, and seasonal pollen and allergens. The shell is washable and the filters are replaceable, so the mask stays in service while the filter changes.
Some organizations allow reusable masks such as the RZM3 for tasks their own safety program has determined do not require a NIOSH-approved respirator. Whether that applies to a particular task is a decision for the employer and its safety personnel. RZ is not able to make that determination. If you are unsure whether the RZM3 is appropriate for work you are doing, speak with your safety officer before using it.
Check fit and wearing options.
Explore the three-strap design, nose adjustment, and wearing options. Follow the product instructions and check how the mask works with your other equipment, including safety glasses. See sizing and fit guidance.
Match replacement filters to your mask.
Choose the RZM3 replacement filter in the size and configuration that matches your mask. Follow the product instructions for inspection and replacement; the work and conditions affect filter needs. Check compatibility or shop replacement filters.
Keep finishing tasks separate.
The RZM3 filters particulates only. It does not protect against gases, vapors, fumes, carbon monoxide, chemical contaminants, or oxygen-deficient atmospheres. The active carbon layer in some filters is intended to help reduce nuisance odors and is not a protection claim.
Review RZ Pro configurations for your market.
For RZ Pro FFP2 and FFP3, review the exact certified configuration, documents, fit requirements, and country of use. Your employer or safety personnel must confirm suitability for the task. European certification does not establish United States NIOSH approval.
