For more than 15 years, RZ Mask has built relationships with firefighters, departments, agencies, and professional users seeking a lightweight, reusable option for appropriate applications outside environments requiring SCBA or other required certified respiratory protection.
More Than a Decade in the Field
A look back at firefighters wearing earlier generations of the RZ reusable mask platform.
Serving Professional Users Since 2010
Earlier generations of RZ masks were adopted by firefighters and other professional users for a variety of tasks involving airborne particulates, nuisance odors, outdoor work, maintenance, cleanup, and other applications evaluated by their organizations.
That history helped shape the reusable-mask philosophy carried forward in today's RZM3 platform.

Frequently Asked Questions.
Clear answers on certification, appropriate use, filtration, maintenance, department evaluation, purchasing, and international respiratory-protection options.
Is the RZM3 NIOSH certified?
No. The standard RZM3 with F3 filtration is a premium reusable particulate-filtration mask and is not a NIOSH-certified respirator.
It should not be selected for a U.S. workplace application where OSHA, department policy, a respiratory-protection program, or another applicable requirement calls for a NIOSH-approved respirator.
Does the RZM3 replace SCBA?
No. The RZM3 does not replace SCBA and should never be presented or used as an alternative to SCBA where SCBA is required.
It is intended only for appropriate department-approved, non-IDLH applications where SCBA and required certified respiratory protection are not needed.
Where can firefighters use the RZM3?
Departments may evaluate the RZM3 for appropriate, non-IDLH particulate applications where department policy and the applicable respiratory-protection requirements do not require SCBA or another certified respirator.
Potential examples can include station and facility maintenance, dusty shop work, equipment maintenance, non-hazardous training, general outdoor particulate work, and certain post-incident cleanup activities after atmospheric assessment establishes appropriate conditions.
Can the RZM3 be used during structural firefighting?
No. The RZM3 is not intended for interior structural firefighting, active structural fire suppression, IDLH atmospheres, oxygen-deficient environments, or situations involving unknown contaminants.
Use department-required SCBA and certified respiratory protection for those environments.
Does active carbon protect against carbon monoxide or hazardous gases?
No. The active-carbon layer in applicable RZ filters is intended to help reduce nuisance organic odors. It should not be relied upon for protection from carbon monoxide, toxic gases, hazardous vapor concentrations, oxygen deficiency, or unknown atmospheric hazards.
Active carbon for nuisance-odor reduction is not equivalent to a gas-and-vapor cartridge selected under a workplace respiratory-protection program.
What is the filtration performance of the RZM3 F3 filter?
RZM3 F3 filters have demonstrated 99.9% particulate filtration down to 0.1 micron in RZ's filtration testing.
That performance specification describes the filter's tested particulate-filtration capability. It should not be confused with NIOSH certification or used to imply that the standard RZM3 is a NIOSH-approved respirator.
How does the F3 filter improve breathability?
The premium F3 high-flow filter is engineered to provide up to 50% better breathability than RZ's standard F1 filter while maintaining high particulate-filtration performance.
Reduced breathing resistance can be especially meaningful when crews are evaluating comfort and wearability during physically demanding, department-approved tasks.
Are filtration test results available?
Yes. Departments evaluating RZ products can request technical product information and available filtration test results for review.
This can help chiefs, safety officers, purchasing teams, and other stakeholders evaluate the product specifications before broader adoption.
How is the RZM3 sized?
The RZM3 is offered in multiple sizes. Current RZM3 sizing uses Small, M/L, and XL, and RZ provides a sizing guide to help users select the appropriate shell and matching filter size.
Because proper fit affects comfort and filtration performance, departments should evaluate sizing with the actual firefighters who will be wearing the system rather than assuming one size will work for an entire crew.
How often should RZM3 filters be replaced?
Filter life depends on several factors, including particulate concentration, duration of exposure, breathing rate, humidity, and the specific work environment.
Replace the filter when it becomes visibly dirty, breathing resistance noticeably increases, or after significant particulate exposure. Filters are not washable and should be replaced rather than cleaned.
How is the RZM3 shell cleaned?
The reusable outer shell can be disassembled for cleaning. Remove the filter and other removable components before cleaning the shell according to RZ's care instructions.
Do not wash or clean the filter media. Filters should be replaced when they reach the end of their usable service life.
Can our department test the RZM3 before adopting it?
Yes. RZ offers a Department Evaluation Program so qualified departments can evaluate the RZM3 with their own personnel before considering a larger purchase.
The evaluation process is intended to help departments assess sizing, comfort, stability during movement, breathability, eyewear fogging, filter replacement, cleaning, and overall crew acceptance.
Request a Department EvaluationDo you accept purchase orders?
Yes. RZ can work directly with fire departments and public agencies that purchase through a department purchase-order process.
Department buyers can contact RZ for purchasing assistance, product configuration, replenishment planning, and the documentation needed to support the order.
Is volume pricing available for departments?
Yes. Department-level and volume purchasing options are available. Pricing can depend on mask quantity, filter requirements, sizing mix, replenishment needs, and the scope of the department rollout.
RZ can work with the department after evaluation to develop an appropriate purchasing plan.
Which RZ products are certified for Europe and the UK?
RZ offers separate certified respiratory-protection platforms for markets requiring EN 149 performance.
CE-certified under EN 149. FFP2 requires at least 94% particulate filtration. RZ reports performance up to 98% filtration down to 0.3 micron for the RZM3 FFP2 configuration.
CE-certified under EN 149 with a minimum 99% particulate-filtration requirement, providing RZ's higher European certified protection level.
Certification requirements can vary by jurisdiction, employer, department policy, and task. European and UK departments should confirm the exact certification, marking, and protection level required for their intended application before deployment.
Is the standard U.S. RZM3 the same as the RZM3 FFP2?
No. These should be treated as distinct product configurations.
The standard RZM3 with F3 filtration is a high-performance reusable particulate mask but is not NIOSH certified. The RZM3 FFP2 is a separately certified configuration designed to meet the EN 149 FFP2 requirements applicable to its certified market.
Departments should purchase the product configuration that corresponds to the regulatory and respiratory-protection requirements of their location and intended use.
